Sonic Charge Microtonic, also known as µTonic, is a drum and percussion synthesizer paired with a pattern-based drum machine engine. It functions both as a sound module playable via MIDI keyboard or sequencer and as a pattern engine that synchronizes with your host sequencer to generate drum patterns. The synthesizer produces entirely synthetic drum sounds in real-time without using any samples or pre-rendered waveforms, offering a unique and dynamic approach to drum synthesis.

Designed by Magnus Lidström, renowned for his contributions to Propellerhead Software and the Malström synthesizer in Reason 2.0, Microtonic delivers a powerful sound architecture with eight individual drum channels. Each channel features extensive sound shaping tools such as equalization and distortion, enabling a broad spectrum of drum and percussion tones. Its high-quality audio processing includes oversampled oscillators and sample-accurate triggering, ensuring clear and precise sound reproduction across any sample rate.

µTonic offers a user-friendly interface with features like context menus, popup hints, and comprehensive editing options including randomization, cut, copy, and paste for programs, drum patches, and patterns. The pattern engine can control other plug-ins via MIDI out, expanding creative possibilities. Despite its rich feature set, Microtonic remains CPU efficient, typically consuming less than 5% of CPU on a 2.0 GHz processor.
